The precise origin of the game of darts is not known. Its first traces are found in some manuscripts from the
Middle-Age . It is also said that the game was practiced on the famous Mayflower ship. In recent researches we found that Canadian Championships of the NDFC were played at the Canadian National Exhibition. Here is what CNE's 1959 souvenir program mentioned regarding the history of darts: '' The game of darts, which sprang from archery contests in OLD ENGLAND, and started in English pubs, received a big boost here when Canadain servicemen returned after the war,and is growing in leaps and bounds all over Canada. ''
The SIDO-Straight In Double Out (the most popular to this day )
The DIDO- Double In Double Out
The Cricket ( to close(hit the three times) the following numbers : 15-16-17-18-19-20 and bull ,
a double count as 2 hits,a triple as 3 hits)
In competitions, the SIDO is the game almost eclusively practiced in Quebec ( straight In double Out). We usally play 501 point games, reducing the score to zero. When we reach the end with 30 darts or less, we can consider ourselves competitive players. The best ones fnish their games with an average between 15 and 20 darts. To count the average, we divide the score of the game ( ex: 501) by the number of darts used to finish ( ex:25). In this example the average would be 20 points per dart. If there would be points left at the end of the game ( loser), they would be substracted from 501 in order to calculate the average . The 1996 world champion, England's Steve Beaton, has maintained an average on the BDO site ( see other interesting sites.)
The QDA individual Membership card is $20 and with its acqusition, the owner automatically becomes a member of the National Federation. A membership card also enables you to participate to Regional Qualification Tournaments and obtain Ranking Points in the QDA 's Sanctioned Tournaments.
Clubs can also become affiliated for the sum of $ 25 and receive the technical support of the Association. Portable dartboards and tressels can be rented for a cost.
The equipment is quite inexpensive ! A set of 3 darts can be purchased for $8 or $9 , the average cost for a good set is around $30.
There are some specialty stores where darters can get quality supplies such as official dartboards ($40),darts and accessories.. The equipment can also be purchased in many sport outlets and some retail stores.
You can find the official dartboard under these brand names : The dartboard is at least 1.5 inches thick. The darts are composed of many parts : the drum ( made of brass, tungsten, etc), the shaft ( in plastic or aluminum) and the flights 9 often made of plastic, with various shapes). So it is possible to fashion a custom-built dart. The weight will vary between 18 and 26 grams.), the lenght and shape can be adapted to the needs and style of the player.
There are some specialized sale / distributors. Here is a major one :
Now a days the dart game is very well known. The objective of the game is to make the most points possible, while finishing with the exact number of points at the endof the game ( usally 301 or 501 points). The player or team who reaches this goal first, is declared a winner.
Here is the scorekeeping method : each player throws 3 darts, when these darts reach the scoring territory, the playery scores points. The black center, mostly called ** bull's eye ** is worth 50 points, and the red area around the bull's eye is worth 25 points. The crown or double zone (marked by the end of the blue line), doubles the score, and the triple zone triple the score. The other areas on the dartboard ( inside edge wire), are worth the exact number of points made.
So the zone that pays the most is the triple 20 giving 60 points
needless to say that this last zone is the most aimed for.
What makes the game a little difficult is that in order to win, the player has to finish with a double. Practice makes perfect.

A sport in development :
The progress registered in the world of darts these past years is dazzling. The QDA presently counts close to 1000 individual members, and over 25 dart clubs or leagues. Its regional structure has helped the development of this activity. With one key-contact per region (Directors) and a dynamic executive, it is now possible to bring together dart playersat the competitive level as well as the recreational level.
With 4 competitions, the regional structure is able to regroup the 32 best players ( or more) of each area (region) for the Provincial Championships. The best players in the Provincial Championships are selected to represent the province in the * National Championships* managed by the national Darts Federation of Canada.

The Quebec Darts Association helps with the organization of dart leagues by supplying the necessary equipment, and assisting the leagues in preparing tournaments.
Many regional, provincial and intenational competitions are happening all year long, regrouping dart players who want to compete in single, double, mixed triple or teams of four. Recently, dart leagues were set up forth youth ( 18years or less.) They obtained their first provincial Junior Championships in 1985.
